First-time Dubai weekend itinerary — Friday to Sunday on a budget
Three days, the must-do landmarks, the underrated stops, and total spend under AED 800 per person if you skip the high-end brunch. A practical Friday-to-Sunday itinerary.

Dubai compresses a lot of variety into a small geographic footprint. With a focused three-day plan, you can see the old creek-side city, the modern skyline, the desert and the beach — and not blow your budget on hotel-restaurant prices. This itinerary assumes you're staying somewhere along the Red metro line.
Day 1 (Friday) — Old Dubai and the souks
Start with the city's roots. Take the metro to Al Fahidi station and walk into the restored Al Fahidi Historic Neighbourhood. Stop at the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding for their excellent Emirati breakfast tour (AED 145 per person, 10:00 start; book ahead). After breakfast, walk to the Bur Dubai abra station and cross Dubai Creek by traditional water-taxi for AED 1.
Spend the early afternoon in the Spice Souk and Gold Souk in Deira — they're a 10-minute walk apart. Haggle politely; the asking price is usually 30-40% above the bottom. Lunch at one of the Pakistani or Iranian cafés tucked behind the souks (try Ravi Restaurant — Karachi-style biryani for AED 25).
Friday evening, head to the Dubai Mall fountain show (free, every 30 minutes from 18:00) and watch from the lakeside bridge for the best view. Skip the Burj Khalifa entry tonight — you'll see it from across the lake. Total Day 1: AED 200-250.
Day 2 (Saturday) — Burj Khalifa and the desert
Morning: pre-booked Burj Khalifa At The Top ticket for the 09:00 opening slot (AED 169). Crowds are thin, the air is clear before the haze builds, and you'll be down by 11:00. Spend the rest of the morning walking the lower-floor exhibit or browsing the Dubai Mall (Souk Al Bahar across the bridge has the best lunch spots — try Reem Al Bawadi for Levantine grills, AED 90).
Afternoon-evening: book a desert safari with 15:30 hotel pick-up (AED 249 with reputable operators like Platinum Heritage). You'll be back at your hotel by 22:00, full of buffet dinner. Total Day 2: AED 550.
Day 3 (Sunday) — Marina, beach and Palm Jumeirah
Take the metro to JLT or Dubai Marina station and spend the morning on JBR beach — free public access, soft sand, and a strip of cafés behind. The Beach at JBR has reasonably-priced breakfast spots (Aprons & Hammers, Operation Falafel; AED 80-120 per person).
Afternoon: walk the Marina promenade for the architecture, then take the Palm Monorail (AED 30 one-way) to Atlantis Aquaventure entrance. If you have water-park stamina left, the AED 339 day pass is good value; if not, walk down to the Atlantis Lobby Lounge for a coffee and the view, then back. Evening: dhow cruise from the Marina (AED 129) or a beach-club sunset at Eden Beach Club (cover charge AED 100 redeemable on F&B).
Where to stay on a budget
Dubai is cheaper than people assume off the strip. 3-4 star hotels in Bur Dubai, Deira and along Sheikh Zayed Road in JLT run AED 300-450 per night in low season (April-September) and AED 500-750 in peak (December-February). Avoid Friday-night arrival pricing.
Total weekend budget
AED 800-900 per person for activities, transport and food (excluding accommodation). Cut another AED 300 by swapping the safari for a free Dubai Marina evening; add AED 500 if you want a Friday brunch experience.
Getting around
The metro is the best way to cover ground — a Silver Nol card costs AED 25 and journeys are AED 3-7.50. Careem and Uber are reliable and cheap (AED 20-50 for most cross-city rides). Avoid taxis on Friday afternoons when surge is brutal.
